She Always Wakes Alone

In Indian Mythology, a Pennangalan is a woman possessed by a malevolent spirit that drives her to seek the company and carnal knowlegde of men. After she has made love, while she and her partner sleep, the spirit brings about a terrifying change in the woman and wakes and attacks the man. The new appearance of the girl is so horrific that the man dies of terror; the spirit devouring his freshly freed soul. The girl is returned to her normal form, oblivious to what has happened. She wakes, in time, to find herself alone with a wide-eyed corpse; the lover she cherished the night before forever out of her reach. Dismayed and bereft, she is unwittingly driven on to rise and seek another lover.

She never understands, but she will always wake alone.

We see aspects of such a mythical tragedy in the lives of those we love and live with, as we witness the dashings of hopes and loved ones clutching onto shards of their dreams. And of what would a Pennangalan dream? That when she woke, all that she treasured was still there?
